Coffee Talk v.9

  • Even though the PSL is back, Disney World is decorated for Halloween, and our friends still in Germany are back to wearing sweaters and boots, the weather in Florida makes it clear summer is still alive and suffocating here. I'm convinced fall might not ever come. Someone tell me I'm wrong! I don't think I can live here if it never feels like fall.

  • So, I think we're going to plan a trip to Vegas after the New Year! Neither D nor I have ever been and we kind of feel like it needs to be a checked box on our bucket list sooner rather than later. For those of you who've gone, what's the best reasonably priced hotel on the Strip? Any must-see sights/activities/restaurants?

  • Germany feels like it was such a long time ago. Maybe not years, but more than just 2.5 months since we left. Our life in Florida is so different from our life abroad, it's almost uncanny. Like polar opposite lifestyles...but still such an important, defining piece of our life puzzle. We talk about Germany almost daily and still can't believe those 3 years happened. Such a sweet chapter of our story, but we settle deeper and deeper into our new American life each day. I hope Germany won't feel so far away forever.

  • Speaking of Europe, I've finally set up my iMac and I'm ready to get back to sharing more of our travels! I used to be overwhelmed by the thought of being so backlogged with travel posts, but now that we're no longer abroad, I'm thankful for the opportunity to relive those trips with this blog. Question is, what trip to post about first?!? Weigh in...would you want to hear about our recent Adriatic cruise OR the Baltic cruise I never speak of? I have a feeling I know the answer to this already. ;)

  • Please tell me you all have watched this video? I've never had my wisdom teeth out, but if I ever do, I'm positive I'd be like this kid. The flag waving? The Papa-bear chair? I almost peed myself. Also, do all men get super emotional after anesthesia? Because every video we watched after this, they all cried. Anesthesia= truth serum.

  • Three things I hate about Florida: the humidity (and the constant sweating it induces), toll roads to Orlando, and driving in torrential downpour (re: monsoon) rain storms.

  • I am so ready for fall TV to start back up. Re-runs have become the bane of my existence. Is it weird that I'm really excited to watch the Duggar wedding? That family fascinates me.

  • We currently have no idea where in the world D's car is. Seriously. We shipped it from Germany on June 20th and haven't seen it since. All those articles you've read online about IAL (a.k.a the worst vehicle shipping company in the world), military car losses/damage/delays, and the 5 million dollar class-action lawsuit against them...yeah, we're caught in that crap storm (although not a part of the lawsuit...yet). We're now 30 days over the date they said our car would be back in our hands...with no end in sight. Frustrating barely begins to describe this situation. Thankfully, IAL is paying for D's rental car IN FULL (praise the Lord!), but not knowing where our car is located or when we'll see it again is becoming pretty scary.

  • Raise your hand if you watched the Unofficial Saved By the Bell move this week! Raise your hand if it majorly disappointed you. [[RAISES HAND!!]] I was expecting it to be much more telling and whole heck of a lot juicier than it was. I think Dustin Diamond has gotten soft. Seems like he produced the movie to get everyone to feel sorry for him, but then made it seem like he really did love being Screech at the end of it. Confusing. Even so, now I'm itching to watch the entire series all the way through...including the College Years. #zachandkelly4eva

  • Now that all our boxes are unpacked and everything has found its new place, we're excited to start making a few changes to the house. Home ownership has proved to be lots of fun, but also so much work! Even in a turn-key house, there's things we'd love to make just a smidge better. I foresee custom closet organization, fence building, and other various home improvements as the new norm for holiday gift giving for Team Cote. Happy birthday! Here's a fertilized lawn!

  1. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm excited for the Duggar wedding, too! They suck me in with their craziness!

  2. it NEVER feels like fall there. Winters are usually still in the 90s. The coldest Ive ever seen it get there is in the 60s I think during the day. In high school I remember a REALLY cold winter but the lowest it got was 40s. haha. no falling leaves there. No cool breeze. Just hot hot sun and humidity 95% of the year!

  3. I hope you get your car soon. We sure are having fall weather over here. I have been wear long sleeve and hoodie. I even had to bust out heavy blanket for the bed.

  4. You have to go to Red Rock Canyon just outside of Vegas when you go. It's so beautiful there!

  5. I love Vegas! We go every year in December. We love the Mirage, it's a smaller hotel & easy to navigate & you can usually get it for a good price. If you want to spend more, the Wynn is great. Go see a Cirque du Soleil show, our favorite is O.

    1. A Cirque show is high on my list of shows to see! And I checked out the Wynn last night...so pretty! Thanks for the recommendations!

    2. Oh, Fall. The best time of the year. It seems like it lasts maybe 6 weeks for us in New Mexico. This Fall baby misses changing leaves and cooler weather!

As for Vegas, I agree with Lacey! The Mirage is awesome, affordable and our room was gorgeous! We went to a Cirque show at the MGM Grand and it was amazing. I think it was called Ka. I suggest The Capitol Grille for dinner one night. We had those back in DC so it was nice to visit an old fave. Enjoy your trip!

  6. I'm totally going to rain on your parade. After two years of being stationed in Florida, it will never feel like fall...or Thanksgiving...or Christmas. It used to put me in the worst mood to leave work in Nov not need a coat, and have to look at Christmas lights on the drive home. The flip side is come January when all the holidays have passed, the rest of the country is extremely envious as they are freezing, and Florida experiences some great weather.

  8. The weather here in Georgia is pretty similar to Florida - hot and humid and fall comes late! Definitely too hot for a pumpkin spice latte just yet - my friend and I said the same thing this afternoon! When we went to Vegas we stayed at Treasure Island - a good, pretty modern hotel. My brother stayed in the Palazzo - if you want to splash out go there! Swanky and luxurious! I wrote a lot of posts on our Vegas trip earlier this year - memyselfandatlanta.wordpress.com. Hope you find D's car soon! It took our possessions more than 3 months to make it to the States from the UK - hell on earth!

    1. Oh, good! I'll be checking your posts out this week!

I'm gonna need the South to cool off a bit. I miss Germany's DRY heat! And thanks! I hope we find it soon, too!

  9. A Navy friend of mine FINALLY got their car (60 days past its scheduled arrival) and the interior of the car was covered in bird shit. It was ridiculous. The company cut them a check to cover detailing the car, but her story plus every other article out there has convinced me and my husband to sell both of our cars on island and buy two new (to us) cars in Virginia. I can't believe what a mess it has become for so many military members. Fingers crossed for you and D!

  10. Yikes! Total Debbie downer here but I recently read an article on how horrible the PSL is :( it includes caramel cooling apparently is linked to cancer causing. Thankfully there are plenty of recipes out there to make you're own! Score!! I would LOVE to hear about both cruises since I do love the Baltic and I just returned from the Adriatic - OMG amazing!!! Sorry to hear about your car - hope it comes soon!

  11. I totally get your feelings concerning Germany! It's been about the same amount of time that I left Norway and moved back home to Germany and in many ways it feels like a life time away! I'm just glad I spent the first weeks after the move traveling, otherwise I may have gone crazy! I'm glad you're settling in well into life back in the States - and if in doubt, you can also fly back to Europe for a trip! :)

  12. As far as Vegas goes, I really enjoyed my stay at TI (Treasure Island). It was very reasonably priced and it was in a good location on the strip. It is hard to go wrong with sights, there is always something to see...and some things you'd rather not, but what happens in Vegas...I am very excited to see and read more about your travels, it always fills me with wanderlust. I hope the car arrives soon.

  13. Southern California isn't giving me the fall I want either. I guess I should be used to it because Japan never gave me fall either, but that was different! Tropical islands are supposed to be tropical year round. America needs to give me fall!

  14. Oh please write about your cruises!

  15. Its still ridiculously hot here in NC, too. So there won't be any PSL's in my too near future ... it just doesn't feel "right" until the weather starts to cool down a little bit at least!

  16. Amen on the Florida humidity. I am sooo sooo soo over it.

  18. You two should definitely do a Vegas trip. I try and go every year or two just because it's so different than anywhere else..it really is like an adult playground. I would suggest staying somewhere in the middle of the strip or else you will walk forever just to get across the street or you'll spend wayyyy too long in cabs. Being in the middle of the strip will give you lots of things to do near by. My first time I stayed in Vegas was at the Excalibur. It took us exactly 30min to get to the tram that was across the street in the MGM from our room.

I feel the exact same way about the unauthorized saved by the bell movie. I wish it was juicier! I think Dustin diamond needed to make a buck so he jumped at the opportunity to have a film all to himself.

  20. I would LOVE to read about your Baltic cruise!
Also, I loved my vacation in Vegas - I would go back in a heartbeat!

  21. I love Vegas! We went for our honeymoon and stayed at the Wynn, we were able to afford it since we paid in advance way ahead of time and the room ended up being bigger than where we were living at the time! It is a chain but the RA at the mall had a really great happy hour and we were able to sit right at the sushi bar and have the sushi chef just hand us the sushi as he made it.

O and every time I have gone under I have woken up sobbing and asking for my mom!

  22. I've been reading and enjoying your blog for a few months but have never commented until now. I'm extremely envious of your European travels and hope to be able to do something similar in the next few years. Thanks for all of the tips on places to see and things to do. Sorry to hear of the troubles with your car being shipped. Sounds like a pretty unpleasant situation. Hopefully you'll get news on it soon.

Regarding a trip to Las Vegas, between January and March is a great time to visit. March would be the nicest, weather wise, since it's usually in the 70's. I agree with the suggestion from others to stay at Treasure Island. It's one of the more reasonably priced resorts on the strip and is fairly centrally located.

Someone else mentioned visiting Red Rock Canyon and I second that. It really is beautiful and is just a short drive away to the west of town. I would also suggest visiting the Hoover Dam if you get the chance.

If you or your husband are looking to try some of the west coast beers that you can't get in Florida then I recommend checking out the Public House at the Venetian. It's right across the street from Treasure Island and they have a nice tap and bottle list. They usually have a few beers on cask too.

If you have any other questions about Vegas I can try to help answer them. My family and I have lived here for about 12 years now so we can recommend places to go off-strip as well. Good luck with your trip planning!

  23. I can't wait to see the rest of your European travel posts!! And hopefully some disney posts because we're going next September and can use all the help we can get!

  24. I think a couple people already suggested Treasure Island but I'm going to recommend too. I went in September 2011 and I believe on the their website, there was a deal with a special code and we got a pretty good discount. I'm not sure if that is available year round but it's worth checking out. And they had a $20 bottomless mimosa brunch too which was awesome. I really enjoyed my stay there!
