Polish Pottery Adventure: Bolesławiec, Poland

Confession: the only time I ever went to Poland during our 3 years living abroad was to shop. No, really. Sounds so snobby to say..."I just hopped over to Poland for the weekend to shop!" Ugh, I hate myself, too. But such is life when you're living in Central Europe. Amazing shopping adventures in incredible countries, all just a short jaunt away! America, you just don't know what you're missing. However...I do know there are SO many more lovelier cities in Poland than Boleslawiec, home of the country's famed Polish Pottery factory stores. But honestly, Polish pottery shopping was on my European "must-do" bucket list, so it only seemed natural to load into a caravan full of chatting ladies (not once, but twice) and make the 6 hour trek from Wiesbaden to the Polish pottery capital of the world. I needed to see what all the fuss was about. Thankfully I can report it was well worth the trip(s)!

Truth be told, Polish pottery really isn't my style. I know, I know, then why did I want to go so badly? Because it's such a big thing to do. And I wanted to see if I could find anything among all the bold blues and traditional repeating patterns that would suit me. Interestingly enough, I was able to snag a handful of goodies each time I went...and at insanely awesome prices. Polish pottery sold in the states (and in other countries around the world) has large mark-ups, likely because of shipping and importing. But in Boleslawiec, you can find some serious deals. Outlet prices and wide selections of kitchen wares. It's a tad overwhelming. If you can get past the clutter and seemingly never-ending choices, then this town and the stores that keep it thriving can be so much fun to shop for unique souvenirs in. Now, there are all kinds of tips and tricks for finding the "good stuff," as well as a numbering system to know which pieces can be baked/microwaved and have small defects (yadda, yadda)...but I won't bore you with all those details (you can Google it and about a hundred other blog posts will give you the low down--thank you, internet!). What I will tell you is that the shops photographed above were my favorites. You can also Google the names of those places and I'm sure find maps and shopping strategy posts for each of them. Like I said, people are totally obsessed with this stuff!

If you're looking for a SUPER CHEAP but safe place to stay on your great Polish pottery shopping adventure, don't hesitate to spend the night at Pensjonat uJaniny. It's quaint, it's in a super random neighborhood, and has limited parking (not a big deal), but it was 30 euro for one night including breakfast. I'm not kidding you...30 euros! And the staff is so nice and welcoming. For a fun Polish meal (complete with homemade vodka and pierogies), give Opalkowa Chata a go. The salad bar is also ridiculously good, if you like pickled veggies (and I really, really do). It's a quirky place, but they serve traditional Polish fare at awesome prices. I think Poland may have been one of the most affordable places we visited in all of Europe. Probably another reason why the gals go ga-ga over it!

Ahh, the remnants of our impromptu Polish vodka tasting. The waitress at Chata just popped around the corner with a tray full of glasses and 5 bottles of the smoothest homemade vodka I'd ever tasted. As if the pottery shopping wasn't already fun enough! :) If you find yourself in Central Europe and have a quick weekend to spare, hop on over and get your Polish pottery shopping on. It's worth the hype! Want help booking and planning your Poland adventure? Email me at casey@destinationstoexplore.com for a FREE VACATION QUOTE!

We Took the Road Less Traveled Photo Shop!

ATTENTION BLOG WORLD!
I recently took a little leap of faith and opened up We Took the Road Less Traveled Photo Shop featuring all my favorite high resolution photos from our European travels! EEEK!

Some backstory: I would have never ever thought to do this until my wonderful mother-in-love put a little bug in my ear. Aren't moms great? She said I should seriously consider selling some of my prints from our travels. I, of course, was flattered she thought any of them we're frame-worthy, much less something other people would want in their own homes. A part of me figured, well, she's my MIL--moms are, like, cosmically required, bound by the laws of Motherhood to thinking their kids (even by marriage) do awesome things. Then I got to thinking...maybe she's totally serious? Maybe people would be interested in having a piece of our travels in their home? I'm my own worst critic, I know I'm no where near the best photographer in the world. But, it is something I've grown to love and nurture since starting this whole blogging thing almost 4 years ago. What better way to keep our travels alive? So, BOOM! I uploaded a smattering of shots I still moon over (and few that are even hanging on the walls of our new home!) and now you can have a copy of your favorite photo, too! Big hugs and thanks to Mama B!! ;)

For the next 2 months, you can get any print at an introductory 20% OFF. No code needed! You can also choose various print sizes and what material the photo is printed on to make it fit your style and your home. Super easy, right? The holidays are right around the corner (I know, sorry for the reminder), any of these would make a lovely gift for a travel-loving friend or family member. New prints added monthly! As always, thank you for supporting my creative space!

Style Files: Exploring the Irish Coast

[This post features items ℅ Blacks Outdoor and Millets Outdoor Store. All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

Our trip to Ireland was one of my favorite trips to plan during our time living abroad. Not sure if it was the allure of vast rolling green countryside or the fact that we were visiting an English speaking country for once, but we were so excited to finally be able to explore all Ireland had to offer. We spread out our 4-day visit among a number of different areas of Ireland…many with different terrain and weather, but all super flippin' gorgeous.

When packing for our trip, I remember telling D to pack boots, gloves, and a heavy coat. Even though we were visiting towards the beginning of spring and Europe had already been giving us some unseasonably lovely weather, I knew we still needed warm duds. Ireland is known for having bouts of rain, sharp winds, and mud puddles the size of a Guinness hangover, so being prepared for all of the above seemed like the safest bet. The insanely kind folks over at Blacks sent over a fabulous Jack Wolfskin 3-in-1 coat for me to stay dry and warm during our Cliffs of Moher experience. While the sun shined for most of the day, thank goodness for that coat! It saved me from the multiple random hail showers we encountered along the coast. Seriously, it sun-hailed like 7 different times over the course of our 9 hour tour. Ireland weather might just be more bizarre than Germany weather, if you can imagine such a thing. And just a note (because I wish someone would have told me this years ago)--if you guys are scratching your head thinking you've never heard of the Jack Wolfskin brand before…it's because JW is a European retailer (German, to be exact!). When D and I first moved to Germany, we noticed everyone around town sporting Jack Wolfskin attire, but neither of us had never ever heard of him before our time abroad. A few short weeks later, I bought my first rain jacket from Jack W and have only grown to love the brand more as I keep adding pieces to my wardrobe. Especially since my Jack gear keeps me looking European. Note to future expats to Germany…buy Jack Wolfskin anything and you'll blend right in. Swear it!

Another seriously awesome piece of Ireland-necessary wardrobe? These North Face Etip gloves. They are a blogger/instagrammer/smartphone-lovers DREAM! When that Millets box arrived in my mailbox, I had no idea I'd fall in love with a pair of gloves so much. With one fingertip, I could toggle any touchscreen WITHOUT having to take my gloves off. I spent all of Christmas market season sliding my gloves off and on, freezing my hands to ice cubes just to snap photos with my iPhone. In Ireland, I Instagrammed to my hearts content thanks to my new gloves. I know we're on the brink of summer, but seriously, y'all…go do yourself a favor and stock up on a pair of these for next winter. I may have to book a ski trip just be able to use these bad boys again. Thanks, Florida. ;)

I'm happy to report my new coat, gloves, and even my favorite wellies were well used and appreciated during our Ireland adventure. After traveling all around Europe the last 3 years, I've learned to invest in quality pieces that are not only cute, but also hold up to whatever terrain or weather condition I might put them through. You tend get more milage from the good stuff. This dynamic duo definitely passed the test!

Look out for more from the Cliffs of Moher this week!

Travel In Style with Graphic Image [GIVEAWAY!]

*I was sent this product for review c/o Graphic Image. All thoughts & opinions expressed in this post are my own.*

True story. As you all know, D and I LOVE to travel. We're off jaunting around Europe at least once a month. Because we travel so much, we've mastered the art of booking trips, finding great travel deals, and taking the path of least resistance when it comes to getting from point A to point B at our destinations. These days, though, we're diligently working on upgrading our travel style. Like a gift from heaven, Graphic Image to the rescue! I received these B E A U T I F U L his & her's monogramed luggage tag and passport cover travel sets c/o Graphic Image a few months ago. I was floored when they finally came in the mail and couldn't wait to give them a try on our Spanish cruise last month. D was almost more stoked than I was...mostly because this is the first company that's ever offered to swag him up as well. The boys behind the blog rarely ever are included in blogger perks, so DANKE, Graphic Image! Ahem, back to my story...I got the bright idea to wait until we were actually leaving for our cruise to take photographs of the new travel gear we'd acquired. I thought it'd be SUPER cute to photograph us pulling our suitcases through the cruise terminal with our sweet new luggage tags flapping in the wind. I was all about creating a travel story to go along with showing off the goods. Oh, how stupid a blogger I am. Allow me to let you in on a little secret...DON'T BE LIKE ME! Don't wait to snap adorable photos for your product reviews. Why? Because you'll get to the cruise terminal and realize someone's stollen your adorable new monogrammed luggage tag right off your suitcase.

$*#@!!! (forgive my French)

We arrived in Barcelona, toured around the city, taxied to the cruise terminal, and I teared up when I realized my luggage tag hadn't made it along for the ride. Pissed doesn't even being to describe my feelings that morning. I was mad at the individual who'd took it upon themselves to snag my tag (I'm pretty convinced it was stollen at the airport while my bags were in transit because the tag was secured properly and it's high-quality leather...wasn't going anywhere), but I was even more mad at myself for waiting to take photos of it. I know, I know...so silly. But, I loved my new luggage tag. I'd hardly gotten the chance to show it off! D was sweet and consoling, but as I sat there looking at his still intact luggage tag, taunting me, I continued to fume. I get why someone would want it...it's a well-made leather luggage tag. It's gorgeous. But, it had my monogram on it. Maybe that person also had the initials CHC? Fat chance. Either way, I'm luggage tag-less after only half a trip. Major sad face. The silver lining? I've still got my awesome leather passport cover. And I'll fight anyone who tries to steal that one from me!

Moral of the story is...I can't have nice things. KIDDING! Kind of. But really, head on over to Graphic Image and check out their awesome array of leather travel gear (and journals, and planners, and photo albums...so much to choose from!). I'm absolutely in love with the half of the set I have left and I'm eyeing a few gifts for my traveling friends this holiday season! Luggage tags would make great stocking stuffers! Santa, are you listening?
I kind of need a new one. ;)

Want to travel in style yourself? Graphic image is giving away a leather passport cover & luggage tag set to one of my lucky readers! You choose the color and monogram! Sweet, right?

ABOUT THE SHOP: In the summer of 2011 I had the idea of making a set of custom pint glasses with our home brew name on them. That escalated to researching how to make them myself, which turned into an awesome set of glasses all our friends loved. "You should sell those!" kept being repeated, so I decided to give it a try. Soon, ScissorMill was born. Since opening I have expanded my product line to accommodate the need for other unique personalized products. Now I offer wedding gifts and favors along with tap handles, wine plaques, and cutting boards. Business is good and I'm very happy to be a part of the Etsy Market Place.

ABOUT THE SHOP: The bowtie&cotton project got started in February 2012 because of the love of fabrics, patterns, and an obsession with the sartorial elements. My background is in fashion. I like the classic understatement style as you can probably see from quite a few of the fabrics I've picked for my products. They may seem simple, but with the keen eyes, you see the unique details. With that said, I also enjoy finding interesting seasonal patterns to add to the store...as I believe, life occasionally needs some bold colors and fun accessories.

ABOUT THE SHOP: I am a military wife, and my passion for the military has been a life-long venture. When my husband deployed shortly after we had our first son, I looked for things I could do to keep me occupied. I found myself hand-painting dinnerware and creating anything military. Pretty soon, LE's Creations was born. This shop features all of my military creations. Custom requests are more than welcome!

ABOUT THE SHOP: I like to compare the creating of a pot to a song. The perfection of each step from kneading, forming, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and the final glaze firing, has to all work together to create the harmony of a great piece. It gives me real satisfaction to eat out of a handmade dish or grasp a shaving mug, that is an individual, with personality, not just another assembly line number. My wares are to share that joy with you!
