Passport to Germany: Bamberg

Back in June, D and I went on a little day trip south to Bamberg, an adorable town (and UNESCO World Heritage site) nestled in the Upper Franconian region of alluring Bavaria. Bamberg is famous for its quaint charm, colorful timbered houses, and yes, you guessed it, BEER! Oh, but we're not just talking any old beer. Smoked beer. Bamberg's alcoholic claim to fame. To be quite honest, I'm not a fan. But I'm partial to any beer of the Belgian variety. Smoked beer, or "Rauchbier" as it's called, is definitely unique. It's the first time in my life I've ever had a beer that tasted reminiscent of bacon. Not bad at all...but also not my cup of tea. Or beer, rather. What I can tell you is that amongst the cobblestones and biergartens that Germany is so common for, Bamberg definitely shines as one of my favorite day trip cities. With so much to see, do, and eat, you'll have a hard time staying for only one day! And honestly, give the bacon beer a try. You'll regret it if you don't! Check out all of my Bamberg recommendations below and get to planning your own trip! Bis bald!

  1. Beautiful pics. I'm only two hours away from Bamberg but have only been there once passing through, I thought it was rather dumpy looking but I'm pretty sure we were in the wrong area because I didn't see any of these lovely things and I hear great things about Bamberg all the time. I'm gonna have to give it a second look and maybe go up for the day.

  2. Well isn't Bamberg the most lovely and quaint place ever? I adore the brightly painting buildings and deeply sloped rooftops. Germany seems like one of those places where a piece of magic is discovered around every single corner. Thanks for sharing!
